Student of the Nine Weeks: Olivia Hooks

by Jadyn Barker and McKenna Lutton

Super Senior Olivia Hooks has been chosen by her teachers as the Student of the Third Nine Weeks. As this is her final year at Shenango, Liv is extremely honored to receive this award as it recognizes her character and her hard work, both of which are her trademarks.

As Liv looks towards her future, she is motivated to keep pushing herself to her fullest while spreading kindness to everyone she crosses paths with. “I truly believe being a leader instead of a follower is one of the most important traits that I have along with having a welcoming heart,” says Liv.

When Olivia thinks back to those who have influenced her, her cousin Arielle comes to mind. “Her love for God is so radiant that she inspires me to carry that through the school day.”

Liv’s role model has definitely rubbed off on her, and her teachers would agree. “Liv shines so brightly in my class, but also everywhere she goes! I truly believe that every room she steps in is instantly more cheerful, optimistic, and kind,” notes anatomy teacher Mrs. Miller.

Choir teacher Mrs. Leali feels the same way.  “Olivia is a delight to have in class.  She is always smiling and a positive leader.  She brightens any room that she enters.”

As for her classes, the favorite of her senior year has been Advanced Literature with Mr. Mayo. “He has a spunky attitude, has a great way of teaching, and always welcomes his students with a smile. It is a pleasure having him as a teacher.”

The admiration is mutual, as Mr. May notes, “Olivia’s success lies in her positive personality. Day in and day out, she comes to class ready and willing to learn. This attitude is contagious and benefits not only Olivia but the class as a whole.”

Outside of the classroom, Liv is captain of the majorette squad and is an active member of Victory Family Church.

With all of the extracurriculars, “It can be difficult to balance time,” but Liv manages by writing in her planner and completing homework as soon as possible. “I try to stay away from procrastination the best I can.”

While most people know Liv in school, they may not know what she is like outside of the classroom. “A lot of people know me as a girly girl, but in reality, I absolutely love the outdoors.” She is passionate about hunting, fishing, quad-riding, working out, and kayaking.

Mr. Dess sums it up best when he says, “Olivia is one the hardest working students at Shenango. She approaches every day with optimism and a smile.”
