Class of 2023 Student of the Nine Weeks: Olivia Hooks

by Izzy DeVivo and Rhyann Kelly

Junior Olivia Hooks has been awarded Student of the Nine Weeks. Students are selected for showcasing traits like an academic understanding of the expectations of their teachers, being kind to their peers, and consistently being a hard-working student.  Olivia possesses all of these traits, and more!

Motivation is a key aspect to thriving as a student, and Olivia knows this well. “My parents motivate me so I can earn good grades.” Her parents are her biggest role models because they push her to do her best.

Nominated by chemistry teacher Mr. Vecenie, he notes,“Olivia is one of the most pleasant and friendly students that walks through my door every day.”

English teacher Mr. Mayo feels the same way.  “Olivia is the epitome of a good student. She ALWAYS puts in a great effort and wants to learn. Her positive attitude is contagious and makes for a better learning experience for everyone involved.”

Having excellent teachers is important in a learning environment. Olivia appreciates her teachers who have “understanding and patience when working with the students.” Olivia’s favorite class is Honors English 11 and she enjoys it because “Mrs. McKissick makes it very fun for the students.”

Olivia is also involved in majorettes. Majorette advisor Mrs. Othites notes, “She is a majorette co-captain and helps out with the younger elementary students every week for several hours.  She is very dependable and dedicated to helping out with the younger girls.”

Balancing schoolwork and extracurricular activities isn’t always easy, but Olivia makes it look easy! Her biggest tip to students to manage their time is “ to make a calendar,” which is a strategy that has helped her keep track of her requirements for classes and practices.

Congratulations to Olivia Hooks for this impressive accomplishment!
